Frequently Asked

Why shouldn't I pay my SF ticket?

Under California Vehicle Code § 40204, paying a parking ticket is treated as an admission of liability and permanently closes your right to dispute it. This is the single most important thing to know about SF parking tickets. If you plan to contest, do NOT pay — file your dispute within 21 days instead. AutoDismiss generates your letter immediately so you have maximum time.

What is a Level 1 protest?

San Francisco uses a three-level appeal process. Level 1 is a written protest submitted to SFMTA — you explain why the ticket should be dismissed, and an adjudicator reviews it. Most successful dismissals happen at this stage. If denied, you can request a Level 2 in-person hearing, and if denied again, you can appeal to San Francisco Superior Court.

How long does SF take to respond?

SFMTA takes up to 90 days to review and respond to a Level 1 protest. You'll receive a letter with the decision. No late penalties accrue during this review period. AutoDismiss tracks the status on your dashboard and notifies you when a decision arrives.
